SoHo Locksmith — Licensed 24/7 Service for Lofts, Galleries & Commercial

Locksmith in Soho, NY

Golden Key is a licensed, bonded and insured locksmith serving SoHo, Manhattan since 1984. Our professional technicians provide residential and commercial lock changes, rekeying, high-security hardware installation, emergency lockout service and complete security solutions across zip codes 10012 and 10013 — Broadway, Greene Street, Mercer Street, Prince Street, Spring Street, West Broadway and Wooster Street.

SoHo’s buildings were built as factories and converted for residential, retail and gallery use — which means the doors, frames and lock hardware are unlike anything in a standard Manhattan apartment building. Freight doors with industrial-weight frames. Oversized mortise locks with non-standard backsets. Co-op buildings with board-mandated lock brands and finishes. Retail flagships and galleries with alarm-integrated security hardware and insurance-specified locking systems. A SoHo locksmith needs commercial-grade inventory, knowledge of historic building hardware, and the ability to work within co-op board requirements. Our team carries Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Schlage, Yale and Adams Rite on every service vehicle because SoHo demands that range on any given call.

Every Golden Key technician is trained, licensed and background-checked. SoHo co-op boards, gallery owners, retail property managers and loft residents trust us with access to some of the most valuable properties in Manhattan. We have earned that trust through four decades of professional, insured service — a Manhattan locksmith with specific SoHo expertise, not a general service making its best guess on a building it has never seen before.

SoHo Lock & Security Services

Residential: lock changes, rekeying, deadbolt installation and upgrade, mortise lock service for converted loft doors, smart lock integration, co-op compliant hardware, building entrance security. Commercial: master key systems for multi-floor retail and office buildings, gallery and showroom security hardware, electronic access control, panic bar installation, alarm-integrated locking systems, rolling gate locks.

For SoHo’s converted loft buildings, we carry oversized mortise sets, commercial-grade cylinders and industrial door hardware that matches the original conversion prep. For co-ops with approval requirements, we work within board specifications. All hardware is professional-grade and manufacturer-warranted. All installations meet current NYC building code, fire safety and landmark preservation requirements.

SoHo Property Security — Lofts, Storefronts & Gallery Spaces

SoHo security balances high property values with building structures that were never designed for residential or retail use. The loft doors are heavier and wider than standard, requiring commercial-grade hardware to secure properly. Ground-floor retail and gallery spaces need multi-point locking systems, reinforced strikes and — in many cases — insurance-compliant hardware specifications. We provide security assessments specific to SoHo property types and install hardware matched to the actual risk and building structure.

For co-op and condo loft buildings, the building entrance lock is the critical shared security point. We rekey building entrances during turnover, install electronic access systems where management permits, and upgrade aging intercom and buzzer hardware. Licensed, insured, and experienced with SoHo’s specific building requirements.

We Are Trusted Over 40 Years

Licensed locksmith service in SoHo since 1984 — protecting Manhattan’s lofts, galleries and storefronts for four decades. Golden Key: the locksmith SoHo trusts with its doors.

Mark came to our apartment after we couldn't lock the door. He replaced the internal cylinder and made it safer with a Mul-T-Lock upgrade.

    Chloe Glasberg

Needed urgent lock change for our DUMBO store. They used Mul-T-Lock cylinders for extra security. Highly recommend.

      Rui Costa

Kenny replaced weatherstripping on a revolving door at our Upper West Side building. Immediate improvement. The lobby feels like it's summer again during the dead of winter.

SoHo Neighborhood Notes from Our Technicians

SoHo’s designation as a cast-iron historic district imposes hardware requirements that don’t apply anywhere else in Manhattan. Buildings along Greene Street, Mercer Street, Spring Street, Prince Street, Howard Street, and West Broadway fall under Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) jurisdiction, which means any visible exterior hardware change — storefront cylinders, gate locks, visible keyways on cast-iron doors — must meet the LPC’s Certificate of No Effect or Permit-for-Minor-Work standards. Our techs carry LPC-approved hardware spec sheets and coordinate permits when work touches street-facing elevations.

Loft conversions are the other SoHo specialty. Many of the 1870s–1890s warehouse-to-residential conversions off Spring, Broome, and Grand streets still have their original freight entrances retrofitted as apartment doors. These doors are frequently 3½-inch solid-core construction that standard residential deadbolts will not fit without mortising the lock case. We carry extended-spindle Medeco and Mul-T-Lock deadbolts, custom-length through-bolts, and cast-iron-compatible strike plates so lofts can have apartment-grade security without damaging the original door.

Storefront and gallery security is the third pillar of our SoHo work. We service rolling gates and cylinder locks for retail on West Broadway and Spring Street, high-security cylinders for jewelry and watch dealers on Greene and Mercer, and interior exhibition-space padlocks for galleries running after-hours installations. After-hours retail lockouts — staff who clocked out without keys, or new hires who couldn’t disarm the cylinder — are our most common SoHo emergency call, and we typically arrive within 15–30 minutes. For board-managed co-ops and condos we also maintain master-key hierarchies for mid-block loft buildings and handle the rekey chain when sponsor-unit owners sell and new residents take occupancy. All installations are documented for board records.

        SoHo Locksmith FAQ

I’m in a cast-iron loft on Greene Street. What lock replacement won’t trigger an LPC violation?

Any hardware visible from the street — cylinders, trim rings, keyways — is LPC-regulated. We install LPC-approved cylinder finishes (oil-rubbed bronze, antique brass) with Medeco or Mul-T-Lock restricted-key cores underneath, so you get high-security performance without changing the exterior appearance. Hardware that is not visible from the street (interior-only deadbolts, chain guards, apartment-side cylinders) has no LPC restriction.

My loft door is 3½ inches thick. Will a standard Schlage or Kwikset fit?

No. Standard residential deadbolts are specified for 1¾-inch doors with a 2⅜-inch backset. For true SoHo loft doors we use Medeco Maxum or Mul-T-Lock MT5+ with extended spindles and custom through-bolts. We carry all three common door depths in the van, and most installs take 45–75 minutes.

Our gallery on Mercer Street needs after-hours installer access. What access system works with an LPC-regulated facade?

We install rear-entrance keypad or Bluetooth systems while keeping the street-facing storefront on its original cylinder for LPC compliance. Most SoHo galleries use a rolling time-window code for installers managed through our access-control dashboard. For higher-value exhibitions we add an interior magnetic contact sensor tied to an alarm panel.

Can you rekey a SoHo co-op sponsor unit for a new owner within 24 hours of closing?

For a standard loft with up to three cylinder points, yes — we schedule a same-day visit. For a full master-key rechain across a 6–12 unit loft building we typically need 48–72 hours to cut a new restricted-keyway master set on certified blanks.

We had a staff member leave and keep a key to our Spring Street shop. Is a rekey enough, or do we need new locks?

For restricted-keyway cylinders (Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Abloy) a commercial rekey is enough — the old key becomes mechanically dead. For standard commercial cylinders we recommend replacing the cylinder outright, because aftermarket duplicates may exist outside the restricted system; rekey alone only invalidates the specific key cut we pull.
