Safe types we open
The first thing we ask on a safe call is what kind of lock is on the door and what actually went wrong. A lost combination and a lock that has failed inside the door are two different jobs, and the answer decides how we open it. On every type below we start with the least-destructive method — manipulation on a dial, a bypass or battery fix on a keypad — and drill only when the lock is broken and nothing else will move it. When we do drill, we go through a planned point, repair the hole and fit a new lock so the safe goes back into service.
Dial and combination safes
Mechanical dial locks fail in a few predictable ways: the combination is lost or was never passed on, the dial was forced or over-spun, the wheels have worn so the numbers drift a digit or two, or the relocker has tripped after a knock. Gun safes
Gun safes have heavier doors, hardplate over the lock and one or more relockers, so a wrong move does more harm than it would on a home safe. We open them by manipulation or keypad bypass first. When the lock has failed internally we drill through a planned point that avoids the relocker, open the door, then repair the hole and fit a new lock so the safe is back to full working order.
Floor and wall safes
Floor safes set in concrete and wall safes framed between studs give us very little room to work, so the opening is planned around the space and the lock type rather than the other way round. My electronic safe is in lockout mode or has a dead battery — can it still be opened?
Yes. Lockout mode is a timed penalty after too many wrong codes; it usually clears on its own if you leave the keypad alone, so try again after waiting before assuming the lock has failed. A dead battery is often fixable at the door with a fresh battery or the external battery contacts some models have. If the keypad stays dead, the code is lost or the lock will not release after the battery is replaced, we open it and can replace the lock or keypad on the same visit.
