The Sentry dialing sequence, step by step
Step 1: Reset the dial
Clear the lock first: turn the dial to the left (counter-clockwise) at least four full rotations. This disengages all the internal tumblers so no previous turns interfere. Finish by lining zero up with the indicator mark. Don’t rush this — a proper reset is the foundation of a successful opening.
Step 2: First number — right, stop on the third arrival
Turn the dial to the right (clockwise), passing your first number two times, and stop precisely on it the third time it reaches the mark. If your first number is 30: pass 30 twice, stop dead on 30 the third time. Even slightly off prevents the lock from setting.
Step 3: Second number — left, stop on the second arrival
Reverse to the left (counter-clockwise), pass your second number once, and stop on it the second time it comes around. This two-turn leg aligns the second wheel without disturbing the first.
Step 4: Third number — right, straight to it
Turn right and stop directly on your third number the first time you reach it. No extra passes on this leg.
Step 5: Open
Turn the handle down (or clockwise, depending on model). If it doesn’t move, the sequence was likely mis-dialed — go back to Step 1 and repeat slowly. If it still won’t open after a couple of careful tries, stop before you damage the lock.

- The shipping screw. New Sentry safes often ship with a screw or bolt immobilizing the locking mechanism for transit. If a brand-new safe won’t operate, check the manual for the shipping screw before assuming a defect.
- Key + combination models. Many Sentry models pair the dial with a tubular key. The key must be inserted, pushed in, and turned to the unlock position before you dial — a correct combination does nothing with the key locked.
- Where the combination is. Sentry prints the factory combination on a sticker on the front or back cover of the owner’s manual. If you’ve inherited a safe, hunt for the manual before anything else.

A stiff dial, grinding, or a stuck handle is mechanical, not a memory problem — don’t force it. Contents pressing against the door can bind the bolts: push gently on the door while turning the handle to relieve the pressure.
