Custom Master Key Systems for NYC Buildings
Golden Key Locksmith NYC designs, installs, and rekeys tiered master key systems for offices, apartment buildings, storefronts, and multi-tenant properties across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. One master key opens every door while each employee, tenant, or unit reaches only the spaces they are assigned. We plan the keying matrix, supply high-security cylinders, and keep your keying records on file so re-keys after staff turnover are fast. Call (212) 204-1655.

How a Master Key System Works
A master key system is built from two key types working together. A change key opens only one specific lock, while the master key opens that lock plus every other door in its group. This is possible because select pin pairs inside each cylinder are separated by an extra pin — a master wafer, or spacer — that creates a second shear line. Our commercial locksmith team designs the keying matrix so every cylinder is pinned to the exact access level you need.
Locks can also be keyed alike, so one key operates several doors — handy for storage rooms and janitor closets — or keyed different, so every lock has its own key. And because everything runs on a shared keyway, padlocks and cabinet locks can be worked in as well, letting a single key plan cover gates, lockers, and file cabinets along with your doors.
Why Buildings Choose Master Keying
A master key system lets you control exactly who reaches each area — staff open only the doors they are assigned while a manager carries one key that opens everything. It is far more convenient than juggling a ring of separate keys, and it is more secure: if a single key is lost or an employee leaves, we simply re-pin the affected locks instead of replacing all the hardware. It also pairs naturally with broader access control systems on mixed-access properties.
Tiered Levels & High-Security Cylinders
For larger properties we add sub-master, grand master, and great grand master levels so a single matrix can cover an entire building or portfolio. We supply high-security cylinders from Medeco, Mul-T-Lock high-security systems, and ASSA Abloy, and we can rekey your existing locks into a new system without buying all-new hardware when the brands are compatible. We handle both installation and ongoing maintenance — new doors keyed in, worn cylinders swapped out — so the system keeps pace as your property changes. Prefer to go keyless on shared entries? Ask about key fob and key card entry.
Key Control & Restricted Key Duplication
Your system is only as secure as the keys themselves, which is why we build ours on restricted, patented keyways from Mul-T-Lock and Medeco. Blanks for these keys are not sold in hardware stores, and duplicates can only be cut by an authorized dealer with proof the request comes from someone you named on the system. Golden Key Locksmith NYC is an authorized dealer and partner for both brands, so new and replacement keys are cut in-house and logged against your keying records — you always know how many keys exist and who holds each one. That is the point of key control: a lost key is documented and replaced through us; when security requires it, we rekey the affected cylinders so the missing key no longer works.
Master & Tenant Key Systems for Landlords
For apartment buildings and mixed-use properties, the workhorse setup is a two-tier master and tenant key system: every tenant carries a key that works in their unit alone, while the super or property manager holds one master covering those units plus common areas like the lobby, basement, and utility rooms. When a tenant moves out, we re-pin that single cylinder — the old key stops working, the master keeps working, and no other unit is touched. It also cuts the number of keys in circulation building-wide: a single master on the super’s ring instead of a board of labeled duplicates in the office. We design and install master and tenant systems for a single building or a whole group of them, starting with a free on-site walkthrough.

Frequently Asked Questions
Unlock our most frequently asked questions about master key systems in NYC.
What is a master key system and how does it work?
A master key system organizes keys into a hierarchy: the master key opens every lock, while individual change keys open only one specific door — say, a single employee’s office. For large buildings we can add grand master and great grand master levels. It all works by setting a unique pin combination in each cylinder. We design and install custom systems for offices, buildings, and multi-unit properties throughout NYC.
How many levels can a master key system have?
Systems can run several levels deep — change key (one lock), master key (a group of locks), grand master key (multiple groups), and great grand master key (an entire facility). How many levels are practical depends on the lock brand and keyway; most commercial systems support three to four levels without weakening security. We design the hierarchy around your property’s layout.
Can my existing locks be added to a master key system?
Often, yes. If your current locks are a compatible brand and in good condition, we can re-pin them into a new master key system. Mixed or worn hardware usually needs new cylinders or locks. We start with a free on-site assessment, inventory what you have, and design a system that reuses as much existing hardware as possible while meeting your security goals.
