This type of system is perfect for businesses with multiple employees, as it allows you to easily track who has access to which areas of the building.
Golden Key Locksmith NYC can help you with all your commercial door needs, from installation to repair. We carry a wide selection of commercial doors, including fire-rated doors, metal doors, storefront doors, glass doors, aluminum doors, and wood doors. We can also custom order doors to meet your specific requirements.\nNo matter what type of commercial door you need, Golden Key Locksmith NYC can help you find the perfect solution for your space.
An access control system is a great way to keep your business safe and secure. NYC commercial locksmith work splits into a handful of recurring jobs — storefront aluminum doors, master-key office systems, restaurant rear exits, multi-tenant lobby fobs, high-security retail, and access-control platforms. Each one has its own hardware standard and its own NYC code requirement.
For exits and storefronts, see our guide to panic bar code requirements in NYC before replacing emergency hardware.
Storefront aluminum doors are the workhorse: hollow-rail doors with Adams Rite-style narrow-stile mortise locks, paired with a deadlatch and usually a panic exit device on the egress side. Under NYC Building Code §1010, exit doors serving spaces with an occupant load of 50 or more (and all assembly occupancies) must have panic hardware that opens with a single motion in the direction of egress. We replace failed Adams Rite mortise cylinders, swap deadlatches, and install code-compliant panic devices (Von Duprin 99, Detex, Adams Rite 8000-series).
Office suite master-key systems typically run on Schlage Primus, Medeco X4, or Mul-T-Lock MT5+ — all restricted keyways so duplicate keys can only be cut by us with written authorization on file. We design the master/sub-master/change-key hierarchy on paper before we cut a single pin, document it, and hand off a sealed bitting list to the office manager. After a fired employee, the change is usually a single-cylinder rekey on the affected door rather than a full system rebuild.
Restaurant rear-door security has to walk a line: the NYC Health Code (and Building Code §1010) require rear exits to remain operable from the inside without a key, even when locked from the outside. We install panic exit devices with outside key-control trim — the kitchen staff push the bar to leave, the door re-locks behind them, and management still controls who comes back in. Adding a chain or padlock on the inside of a rear exit is a code violation that shows up on DOH inspections.
Multi-tenant office buildings usually run a hybrid: mechanical cylinders on suite doors plus an electronic fob system for the lobby and elevators. On lease turnover we rekey the suite-side cylinders and deactivate the departing tenant’s fob set on the same visit.
High-security retail — jewelry stores in the Diamond District, watch retailers, cannabis dispensaries — needs hardware several grades above standard commercial: UL-listed safes (UL TL-15 minimum for jewelry), Mul-T-Lock Interactive+ or Medeco BiLevel cylinders with restricted keyways, reinforced strike plates, and often a UL-listed central-station-monitored alarm interface. We coordinate with your alarm company so the lock and alarm work together rather than against each other.
Access control: for cloud-managed credential systems we install and service Brivo, Salto KS, Schlage NDE/LE wireless, and Kisi. These let you add and revoke a credential from a phone instead of cutting and collecting keys — useful for high-turnover businesses (gyms, co-working, restaurants).
24/7 commercial response: typical Manhattan and Brooklyn arrival is 30–45 minutes for after-hours commercial lockouts. We bring storefront-spec parts on the truck so a broken Adams Rite cylinder or a failed panic device latch usually gets fixed on the first visit, not deferred.
For a typical 6–10-door office suite on a restricted Schlage Primus, Medeco, or Mul-T-Lock MT5+ keyway, the parts and labor for a fresh master-key build typically run in the $1,200–$3,500 range, plus the per-key cost for issued keys. Restricted keyways carry a higher cylinder cost than standard, but the security benefit — nobody can copy the key at a hardware store — is usually worth it for any office handling client data, cash, or controlled inventory.
If the system is built on a restricted keyway, we usually rekey only the affected level (just the doors that key opened) rather than rebuilding the whole hierarchy — same-day in most cases. If it’s a non-restricted keyway, we strongly recommend converting to restricted at the same time, because a non-restricted master can be copied at any hardware store regardless of who held it.
NYC Building Code §1010 (and the underlying IBC) requires panic hardware on exit doors serving Group A (assembly), Group E (educational), and Group H (hazardous) occupancies, and on any exit door serving an occupant load of 50 or more. Hardware must release the door with a single motion of less than 15 lb of force, in the direction of egress. We install Von Duprin 99-series, Detex, and Adams Rite 8000-series panic devices that meet ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1.
Replace, not rekey, when the cylinder body is damaged or the keyway has been picked/drilled — pinning new tumblers into a compromised cylinder is a temporary fix at best. We document the failed hardware (photos, model, serial), itemize the replacement on the invoice, and provide that paperwork for your commercial insurance claim. Most NYC business owner policies cover lock replacement after a documented forced-entry attempt.
Usually both. Worn closers (LCN, Norton, Yale) lose oil pressure over time and stop sweeping the door the last few inches; a misaligned strike plate or a swollen door also keeps the latch from catching. We service or replace the closer (LCN 4040XP, Norton 1601 are common storefront replacements), realign the strike, and verify the latch engages on its own — which is what NYC code actually requires for a self-closing fire-rated door.
